Thanksgiving Day Run: Help Feed Families This Holiday Season

November 10th, 2009

The Give n’ Gobble is just a little more than 2 weeks away and we are making final preparations for another hugely successful event and we’d love your help!

For those of you who’ve already said “Yes, I can help this year!” and for those of you who’ve helped before - THANK YOU!!!  Your help made it possible to raise enough food (7 tons) and financial contributions (nearly $16,000) for Helping Hands food bank so that their hard working, big-hearted team can feed thousands of people!

Below are the particular areas where we need help:

1) COMMUNITY FLYERS:  This week, we will be delivering “door hangers” to let people know about the Pre-registration and Community Food Drive this Saturday 11/14 from 9 to 11am at the YMCA and ClubSports.  Flyers will be hung on doors in 4 targeted communities in Sherwood — this is a fun way to get out and get some exercise (and a great way to help if you are going to be out of town for Thanksgiving).

We need 10-20 people to help this week and you can work as few or as many houses as you’d like.  If you can help, please reply to this message!
2) THE COURSE:  We have 19 stations on the course and need at least 2 people at each station to direct runners/walkers and cheer them on (plus extra people at the two water stations).  Many of you who helped last year have already indicated that you want to help again and have the same station — no problem!  This year we’d like to encourage all the course volunteers to have as much fun as possible (within safe standards, of course!).  Feel free to transform your station into a fun tailgate party with unique chairs or pop-up tents, music, blowing bubbles, and/or signs cheering on racers - and don’t forget to bring your friends and family with you!

We need at least 50 people on the course. If you can help, please contact Kim Sucher psandks@verizon.net or 503-925-9960

We will have a quick meeting on Sunday, 11/22 at 4pm at the YMCA to explain what will be required and to hand out shirts, vests and maps so that you can head straight to your spot on Thanksgiving morning no later than 8:45 (versus coming early to the stadium).

3) SET-UP and/or CLEAN-UP:  Set-up Teams will arrive at the Sherwood High School at 6:30 to start setting up the registration tents/table/hang signs and put out markers on the course.  And afterwards, help pack-up tables, signage, tents and course markers at the end of the event.  This is a great way to help if you want to also participate in the event.

We will need 10-15 people (see schedule below).  If you can help, please contact Kim Sucher psandks@verizon.net or 503-925-9960

4) REGISTRATION: We will have 5 teams in the registration area including: 1) Same-day registration for individuals and families, 2) Individual Pre-registered packet pick-up, 3) Family Pre-reg Packet Pick-up, 4) Sponsor packet pick-up and 5)Food Donations and T-Shirts (load wagons with food and load trailers/truck).

Again, these areas are a great way to help if you also plan to participate in the event.  You can leave the registration area and head over to line up at 8:45am with plenty of time to spare!
We will need approximately 20-30 people to help with these areas — anyone not participating in the run that wants to help collect bib tags/welcome runners back in and/or help run the Award table, please let us know.

4) SORT FOOD:  Finally, anyone who wants to help unload the food at Helping Hands after the event and/or help them sort food for needy families the following day, please contact Gerry & Dottie Eddy, 503-625-7744.

5) SUPPORT THE AUCTION: We are featuring an online auction this year!  Start your holiday shopping early and help make a difference.  We’ve had over $8,000 worth of valuable products and services donated so far, including: a round of golf for four as well as a Social Golf Membership at the at The Oregon Golf Club, spa packages, RoadRunner ID, $100 gift certificates to RoadRunner Sports, 4 hours of organizing services from Restoring Order, event tickets, sporting goods, business services, Century Hotel stay, new PinotGrill restaurant, and much more!

The auction will be online with eBay from 11/15 - 11/23 and items can be picked up at the event.  You can find our items here or by clicking on the link in the blog sidebar.
If you have something you want to donate, please contact Stacy Owens: 503-267-3099, stacy@stacysellsyourhome.com

Schedule:

6:30AM Set-up team arrives
7:00AM Registration team arrives
7:30AM Same Day Registration
8:00AM Pre-registration Check-in/Bib Pick-up
8:30 - 8:45AM Course Volunteers in Position
9:00AM START!
10:30 - 11:00AM Event ends
11:30AM CLEAN UP IS DONE!

We are so grateful for the amazing support we have received this year. As you can see, it takes a small army to pull this whole wonderful event together. Thank you for everything you have done to help with this event.  It means so much to us and especially to the needy families it helps.
Warm regards,
Cindy

Thanksgiving Day Run: Interview With Give ‘n’ Gobble Race Director, Cindy Aggson

November 10th, 2009

Cindy Aggson at Portland's Thanksgiving Day Race, GivenGobble

How did the Give ‘n’ Gobble Thanksgiving Day Run start? How many years has it been around?

I was inspired to start this event after volunteering for Helping Hands a few years ago when I witnessed food bank organizers Velma Wooley and Alice Thorton in action. These women are my heroes; they have dedicated countless hours to helping get food to families going through tough times. They shared stories of local families that haven’t eaten in days and mothers who can’t afford baby food. It was shocking to see how many families in our community are really hurting. It is unthinkable.  I felt that if these inspirational women could make such a big difference, I wanted to help in some small way. There are so many runners and walkers in this area that are out there on Thanksgiving rain or shine anyway - why not do it together and for a good cause?

Who benefits from the registration fees?

Proceeds from this event go to Helping Hands, a food bank affiliated with the Oregon Food Bank.  They have been around since 1974 and have fed thousands and thousands of families.

How much of the actual registration fees goes to Oregon families?

Our goal is to donate 100% of the registration fees to the food bank. Typically, sponsor contributions cover all of the event expenses - including professional timing, materials, permits, printing, insurance, t-shirts, equipment rentals, etc.  We are still finalizing sponsorships but even if sponsorships are down slightly, at least 90% of registration fees go directly to feed families.

I’m not available to run on Thanksgiving day. Are there other ways I can help the cause?

Yes, there are three ways you can help:
1) Help spread the word — Tell your friends, family and co-workers about the Give ‘n’ Gobble.
2) Become a Sponsor - Go to www.givengobble.com/sponsors.html for details
3) Donate an item to the auction - Contact info@givengobble.com to coordinate

Where can I donate food? Should I bring food to the run on Thanksgiving day?

If you are participating in the Give ‘n’ Gobble, please bring it with you on Thanksgiving Day. It’s a lot of fun to see those bags piling up!  If you aren’t participating, you can drop off food at the Sherwood YMCA or ClubSport in Tualatin on Saturday, November 14th from 9 to 11 at our pre-registration and food drive event.  You can drop off food to any Les Schwab store. (still being finalized — for sure Sherwood and Lake Oswego stores)

How much money did the event raise last year? How many families were you able to feed?

To date, this event has raised nearly $16,000 and over 7 tons of food donations.   Last year, the Give ‘n’ Gobble raised enough to fund Helping Hands for the entire year and enabled them to give out fresh fruits and vegetables plus meat and dairy products to thousands of needy families.

How can I volunteer to help? What do volunteers do on run day?

This is a volunteer-run event and we would love to have more volunteers.  Over the last two years, more than 70 volunteers have helped register participants, give out bib number, collect food and most importantly cheer on runners and walkers along the route to help ensure everyone stays safe and has fun!  Go to http://www.givengobble.com/volunteers.html to register to be a volunteer and get a free t-shirt!

I usually run at the Oregon Zoo Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving.  Why should I consider your run instead?

The Turkey Trot is a great event - raising thousands of dollars for the zoo and the ORCC running group. As a runner and a member of the zoo, I’d happily recommend this event.  I think it is wonderful that we have healthy options in the Portland area and both events have become holiday traditions.  I know there are enough active people in our area so that both events will be full every year.

Based on input from participants and sponsors, I think that the Give ‘n’ Gobble is growing by leaps and bounds because this event is about giving thanks by giving back to needy families.  And this is the time of year when so many people are feeling grateful and wanting to help less fortunate families.  It is heart-breaking to think about how prevalent a local problem hunger really is.  The Give ‘n’ Gobble allows people to do something healthy while helping local families.  It is also an ideal opportunity for families to show their children how easy it can be to give back.  This event literally feeds thousands of people - which is so important in this economy.  We get a lot of participants who run our event because they want to be a part of  something that really makes a difference.
Where is the run located? Do I have to run or can I walk the 5K?

The run happens at the Sherwood High School Stadium.
16956 SW Meinecke Rd, Sherwood, OR 97140

It is only a 20 minute drive from Portland

Link to directions: Click Here.
Are you still accepting sponsors for this year’s event? How much does it cost and what are the benefits of sponsorship?
The annual Give ‘n’ Gobble is on its way. This walk, run and food drive will take place in Sherwood starting at 9:00 am on Thanksgiving Day! The event includes a 5K walk/run as well as a 10K run. The purpose of this event is to raise money for local food banks through sponsorship, registration fees, t-shirt sales and contributions. Additionally we will be collecting non-perishable food items. Participants who donate a bag of non-perishable food will receive a free t-shirt (shirts can also be purchased for $10). Proceeds and food donations will go to Helping Hands and the Oregon Food Bank.

According to the Oregon Food Bank, “every dollar you donate enables them to collect and distribute 6 pounds of food to fight hunger.” This event is quickly becoming a Thanksgiving tradition in the area, allowing people to come together with neighbors, friends and families to help fight hunger right here in our community. This is a great opportunity to help those less fortunate while increasing goodwill and market awareness of your business.

GivenGobble’s Latest Sponsor Offers Words Of Support

November 2nd, 2009

The Ultimate Tan & Spa has been around since 1996 when the first store was opened and over the past 13 years 7 more stores have opened.  Every year we as a company try and give back to the community or help the needy.  We have done various things such as school supply drives, toy drives and food drives for needy families at Christmas and thanksgiving day meals and groceries for needy families.

When we heard about Give N’ Gobble we thought what a great thing to participate in and it is something new and exciting.  We got all of our locations pumped up with setting up donation jars for dollar donations and baskets for food donations.  Any $5 donated or 3 or more cans of food they receive a free tan.  We also put information in every tanning room at each location on what their money and food donations will go to.  At the front desk we have a large printed thermometer that has a goal dollar amount of $750 and each day we call the other locations and tally up how much we have earned and color it in on the thermometer so our customers can see our progress! Thanksgiving Day Run: Benefits of Family Volunteering

October 27th, 2009

Family volunteering strengthens families and strengthens our community. When you decide to become a family volunteer, you are not only contributing to an important cause, but you are also helping your family and children in ways you never thought possible. Here is a sample of benefits your family and your community can achieve through family volunteering.

* Children are able to develop compassion and an understanding for others. Not only will involving children in the decision-making process and volunteer activity help them feel appreciated and respected, but the volunteer activity will also enable them to acquire new skills.

* Parents can help others while spending more time with their kids, passing on important values, and sharing meaningful conversations in a positive environment.

* Nonprofits are often understaffed and overstressed and need additional help. Family volunteering helps them broaden their outreach to the community while improving community image and relations — 97% of social service agencies that involved families found it to be very effective. Depending on their interests, family volunteers may want to help many types of non-profits, including the homeless, the sick and disabled, the elderly, children, animals, and the environment.

* Society benefits from family volunteering, as it is a natural multiplier of volunteers. Studies show that children who volunteer are much more likely to continue as adults and carry on the tradition with their own children.

Thanksgiving Run Portland: So Many Ways To Give This Year

October 27th, 2009

We believe “strongly in families giving back to their community by volunteering their time and making donations.  Families can make a difference without it necessarily being a big financial or time commitment.

Set an example for your kids by demonstrating different ways to give, through donating toys and clothes or by helping serve meals during the holidays.  By doing things like these, you will be teaching your children empathy and compassion.”

You may not be able to help the whole world, but you can make a difference in your own community.   –Elizabeth P. Carter

Here are the ways you can join us in helping needy Oregon families this Thanksgiving:

1) Register for the 5k or 10k Thanksgiving Day Run in Sherwood, Oregon.
